As The Sun Went Down
Poem by Thomas Elliott, 19 December 1905
After the dim of the battle roar
Just at the close of day
wounded and bleeding upon the field
two Soldier lay
one a man of thin gray hair
one a lock of brown
biding each other a last farewell
just as the sun went down
One though of his mother at home alone
feeble and old and gray
One of his sweetheart he left in town
happy and young and gay
One kissed a ringlet of thin gray hair
One kissed a lock of brown
Biding a farewell to the stars and stripes
Just as the sun went down
One knew the joys of a mothers love
One of the sweetheart fair
Thinking of home they lay side by side
breathing a farewell prayer
One for the mother, old and gray
One for his sweetheart in town
They closed there eyes to earth and sky's
Just as the sun went down
